Electric Bikes and Scooter Sales Increasing

electric-bike-sales-increase

Electric bicycles and scooters in the U.S. is increasing by 50% year on year. China has electric bike sales of 25 million electric bikes (called ‘ebikes’) on the road already.

Many electric scooters can hit top speeds of 60 MPH and can go for 90 miles before needing a recharge. A typical electric bike runs between $1,000 and $3,000. An electric scooter will run closer to $3,000 or $4,000. Hybrid bikes and scooters are also available. Unlike hybrid cars, there is no regenerative braking, but the hybrid scooters are so lightweight that they don’t need constant on the road recharging.

Look Out for the TTX01 Electric GP Motorbike

The TTX01 electric sports bike was built to demonstrate the potential of electric power for sports bikes. The TTX01 is based on a Suzuki GSXR 750 chassis and is powered by two electric motors that combined produce up to 86 bhp. This sends the bike to 60mph in 3.5 secs with a top speed of 130mph.

Compared with the original GSXR 750 the TTX01 weighs in at only 165kg which is 11 kilograms lighter than the original bike. This makes braking and handling potentially better also. As we regularly report, the range is the only weak spot but this will be addressed as battery technology improves, this is only a matter of time.

Extended 80km Range KenBay Electric Bike

New extended range electric bike from KenBay

The reason electric bikes and cars have not caught on is because the range of the electric battery and the charge times just couldn’t compare with liquid fuels. But this is only a technology problem that can be overcome, as more money and research in flooding into battery technology this will be a problem of the past.

A good example of the shift is the KenBay electric bike made in Ireland. The manufacturer built a bike with a battery that will last for about 80km per charge. And it recharges by plugging it into a standard wall socket overnight, at a cost of about eight cent in electricity.

The business can’t keep up with demand, and the family has already sold more than 1,000 machines, despite the €1,200 price tag.
