There’s a great post over at Treehugger.com today, entitled “We have Shared Bikes, Why Not Scooters?”
“Here is an idea that builds on the idea of bike-share but takes up a lot less space: Shared electric scooters.” says the entry. (Note that in the example above, the man isn’t wearing a helmet!)
This idea is an entry in the Australian Design Awards competition, by Anton Grimes of the University of New South Wales. He writes:
The Link scooter system is designed as a modular transport solution that can be retrofitted to existing Streetscape Smart Poles. It allows users to hire a small lightweight electronic scooter from a hub and ride to the desired destination and then return the scooter to another hub, where it is recharged.
There are some problems with the idea to be ironed out, of course. The scooter would be inconspicuous — folded up and attached to the lamp-post. But if someone gets hurt while riding it, or worse, runs over someone else, the personal injury lawyers could have a field day.
It’s designer expects it to be in use in Sydney, Australia by 2030… we’ll see!
