Asia’s Electric Bike Revolution to Disrupt Lithium-Ion Battery Playing Field – Gaps Emerge for Phosphate Specialists

Asia’s Electric Bike Revolution to Disrupt Lithium-Ion Battery Playing Field – Gaps Emerge for Phosphate Specialists

Shanghai, China, July 02, 2010 –(PR.com)– GCiS China Strategic Research has published a study of the China market for five types of lithium-ion battery. The study, which provides detailed five-year forecasts, finds that Asia’s booming electric bikes market will drive demand for high-density and stable batteries. This will result in an increased need for lithium-ion batteries using a phosphate cathode.

Lithium-ion batteries have superior power-to-weight ratios and faster charge times than older batteries like lead-acid or NiCad. They are the dominant power source for consumer electronics such as laptops, cell-phones and power tools; products, which for the most part are assembled in China, generating a huge production scale for cobalt and manganese cathode Li-ion.

But these traditional types of lithium-ion batteries are prone to explosion when manufactured at the size required for bikes and cars. “Lithium-ion phosphate is the only commercialized alternative,” said Edward Barlow, senior analyst and author of the study. “Many of today’s market leaders are committed to supplying batteries for smaller applications. The diversified suppliers may not have enough capacity to meet the surge in Lithium-ion phosphate demand over the next three to five years. This is going to create a gap for suppliers with the technological know-how and scalability.”

China’s Battery Sales Grew as E-Bike Market Expands

China’s Battery Sales Grew as E-Bike Market Expands

ZHEJIANG, CHINA, Jun 28, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — Chisen Electric Corporation /quotes/comstock/11k!ciec (CIEC 6.30, -0.03, -0.47%) (the “Company”), a leading lead-acid motive battery producer for the electric bicycle market in the People’s Republic of China, announced today that continuing rapid growth in China’s electric bicycle market fueled a 62.53% increase in the Company’s fiscal year revenues compared with results in the prior fiscal year, while year over year net income grew 6.98%.

Units Sold Increased 85.64%

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2010, revenues generated primarily by product sales rose approximately to $177,192,000 from $109,020,000 in the prior year, while net income increased to $9,500,000 from $8,880,000 a year earlier. Earnings per share were $.19 compared with $.18 in the prior fiscal year. As of March 31, 2010, the Company’s cash position increased to $6,019,000 from $2,620,000 at the same time last year. Reflecting strong price competition, the Company’s unit sales growth during the year exceeded the growth in revenues, as units sold increased by approximately 85.64% to 14,480,000 units for the year ended March 31, 2010 compared with 7,800,000 units in the prior year. The unit increase reflected the continuing rapid growth of China’s electric bicycle market, where electric vehicle sales grew to approximately 100 million units in 2009 and are expected to grow to approximately 120 million vehicles in 2010.

Continuing Demand for Chisen’s Battery Products
Commenting on the fiscal year results, Mr. Xu Kecheng, President and CEO, stated, “We are pleased to report another year of strong growth in the sales of our products. The growing popularity in China of electric bicycles — a very clean, practical and energy efficient form of transportation — has continued to propel the growth of Chisen Electric. Intense competition has led the Company to lower the prices of some of its products in order to maintain or expand market share. Nevertheless, looking ahead we expect to remain very competitive with a continuing focus on new product development primarily aimed at providing products with increased power and reduced weight. We also will continue to emphasize development of long term relationships with important electric bicycle manufacturers, while also focusing on strengthening our position in the growing replacement market and with key suppliers and vendors.” He added, “With the steadily increasing interest in China in the development of alternative transportation vehicles with low emissions and reduced reliance on oil and gas, we also continue to explore the market for electric powered motorcycles and electric cars. Additionally, we are continuing to expand our product mix with items such as chargers, controllers and motors for personal transportation devices. Our goal remains to become the largest battery developer and producer in China with a first class national sales and services network.”

How To Get Americans to Embrace E-Cars

How To Get Americans to Embrace E-Cars

The National Journal posited a debate over the methods to get American consumers to embrace the electric car:

Much of the policy debate over electric vehicles has focused on their impact on the environment and energy consumption. For instance, when the federal government gave out more than $2 billion in stimulus money for electric vehicle technology last year, it was the Energy Department that selected the 48 winning projects. But are we paying enough attention to issues that are normally in the Transportation Department’s purview, like fuel efficiency and infrastructure needs?

What’s the best role for federal, state and local transportation departments to play in developing and promoting electric vehicle technology? If government is to take an active role in putting electric cars on the road, what can transportation officials do that they aren’t doing now? Or should the electric vehicle experiment go on without the DOT? How much should be left up to the private sector, from R&D to charging stations? What practical questions aren’t being asked?

China Might Allow Faster E-bikes

China Might Allow Faster E-bikes

Bloomberg announced on April 19 that China may announce rules to increase the weight and speed of electric bicycles this year, This should help stabilize lead battery consumption from the industry, said Niu Qin, head of general affairs at the China Bicycle Association.

“We feel quite positive” that the authorities may loosen restrictions for e-bikes, Niu said in an interview in Beijing. Currently, speed and weight are limited to 20 kilometres an hour and 40 kilograms. Bikes are usually powered by a 10-15 kilogram battery, with a lead content of about 9 kilograms, he said.

Toshiba’s SCiB rechargeable battery selected for Ev-neo

Toshiba’s SCiB rechargeable battery selected for Ev-neo

The SCiB is a breakthrough rechargeable battery from Toshiba. It offers long life and rapid recharging characteristics. The battery has earned a high evaluation, and so was selected for Honda’s new electric motorcycle, the EV-neo.

SCiB cells will be housed in an SCiB module integrating a battery management system that utilizes the capabilities of the SCiB to the full; it controls overall charging and discharging by analyzing factors that include temperature and voltage. The SCiB’s long cycle life and rapid recharging will allow EV-neo to recharge to 80% of full capacity in only 20 minutes with a rechargeable power source.

Honda plans to launch “EV-neo” in December 2010.

Lithium Ion Batteries Powers E-Bikes and Scooters

Lithium Ion Batteries Powers E-Bikes and Scooters

Scientific American reported: Interest in electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids has come on strong over the past year or so, pushed relentlessly by carmakers promoting a newer, greener generation of transportation. As the Chevy Volt, Ford Transit Connect Electric, Nissan Leaf and others trickle out into the marketplace over the next year, it’s clear that they will go only as far as their lithium ion batteries can take them (which right now isn’t all that far).

Lead Prices for 2010

Lead Prices for 2010

From the MetalMiner: China sowed the seeds for lead’s recovery last year. With the premium of domestic China prices over LME prices during the first half of the year, China sucked in unprecedented tonnages of all the base metals. Imports of lead, however, saw the biggest spike, which, at its peak in April hit 36,357 tons, more than a 160-fold increase in year over year terms.

Indeed, imports in that one-month alone exceeded imports for the whole of 2008 by 14%. LME lead prices bottomed out at a lowly $875/ton in December 2008, but rallied strongly reaching $2,460/ton in September – a 181% rise. Since then, a combination of tightening bank lending requirements by China and comments made about the banks by the President Obama in a speech on Jan 21 have caused all the primary metals to fall.
